LO3 Codes and Conventions

Front Cover:

For the front cover of the magazine I will be following several different Codes and Conventions. One of these is that I will have a large cover image on my front cover this will provide an eye catching front cover that will attract my target audience. BBC Goodfood has used a large cover image that clearly shows the genre and part of an article inside the magazine.

Another convention that I will be following is the use of a large bold masthead on each page. This will make sure that the magazine title can be clearly seen and will also serve as part of a recognisable brand that people will be able to recognise the product in a store.

I will be using another convention that is to have some large bold coverline's on the front cover. I have done this because it shows the reader what other articles will be inside the magazine, the coverlines themselves are bold so that they stand out on the page. This makes them more noticeable to the reader.

I will be using a house style throughout my magazine this will help to create a brand and make the magazine more recognisable. For example BBC Goodfood uses the iconic colours of black and green to create a contrast on the page to help with navigation. For my magazine I will be using the house style of ACE SANS font and yellow, black and light blue.

Contents Page:

For the contents page of the magazine I have also followed several codes and conventions of BBC goodfood. These are:

I will be using a strong title at the top of the page so that it is clear to see what the page is about. For example using a strong bold font and bold colours to make sure that the title is readable. For example I will be using the black and white as a stark contrast on my page. This is the inverted colour scheme of BBC good foods magazine.

Another codes and convention that the magazine is going to follow is having a well laid out contents page. this will help the person who is looking at the magazine to quickly find articles that they are interested in and articles that they bought the magazine to read about. this is a common convention of the magazine BBC good food as well as other smaller magazines such as Tesco extras cookbook and Waitrose and partners magazine.

On both pages there will also be photos of the some of the other articles that will be inside the magazine. This will let the reader know what type of content is inside of the magazine. The images will be bold and vibrant they will make the page more interesting for the reader.

I will also be creating and then using banners in my page, I will use simple banners like BBC goodfood. to create simple yet effective pages and elements of the page.

The last code and convention that I will be using is the use of different kinds of fonts in the page depending on the importance of the text. For example the heading will be in a sans serif font to pop out on the page. This is then used as a strong contrast compared to the serif font of the body copy text. This is similar to the style of BBC goodfood magazine.

The contents page will not have a lot of adverts as I want the magazine to have a simple and stylised look to it. There was still be some other images on the contents page but these will be relating to the articles that are contained in the rest of the magazine.

The magazine will be following several codes and conventions from the BBC goodfood magazine.

One of these is that I will be using a strong contrasting house style throughout the whole of the magazine. This will not only help with the navigation and the reading of the page but it will create a recognisable brand for the magazine. The colours that I have chosen are black boxes containing white text. In my opinion this is one of the starkest colour contrast making it easy to see the text on the page.

Another code and convention that I will be using is the use of a large image on one of the pages. This image can not only be used as diller but it can also be used to show off what is on the page for example in my magazine it will be a photo of what the recipe will create if followed correctly this adds a helpful clue to what the food should look like as well as adding more interest and colour.

I have used the code and convention of using coloured boxes with low opacity to make the text on the page stand out from the rest of the elements. This has allowed me to clearly display the important body copy even though the text itself is small. It can still be read on the page.
