LO3 Codes and Conventions

Front Cover:

For the front cover of the magazine I will be following several different Codes and Conventions. One of these is that I will have a large cover image on my front cover this will provide an eye catching front cover that will attract my target audience. BBC Goodfood has used a large cover image that clearly shows the genre and part of an article inside the magazine.

Another convention that I will be following is the use of a large bold masthead on each page. This will make sure that the magazine title can be clearly seen and will also serve as part of a recognisable brand that people will be able to recognise the product in a store.

I will be using another convention that is to have some large bold coverline's on the front cover. I have done this because it shows the reader what other articles will be inside the magazine, the coverlines themselves are bold so that they stand out on the page. This makes them more noticeable to the reader.

I will be using a house style throughout my magazine this will help to create a brand and make the magazine more recognisable. For example BBC Goodfood uses the iconic colours of black and green to create a contrast on the page to help with navigation. For my magazine I will be using the house style of ACE SANS font and yellow, black and light blue.

Contents Page:

For the contents page of the magazine I have also followed several codes and conventions of BBC goodfood. These are:

I will be using a strong title at the top of the page so that it is clear to see what the page is about. For example using a strong bold font and bold colours to make sure that the title is readable. For example I will be using the black and white as a stark contrast on my page. This is the inverted colour scheme of BBC good foods magazine.

Another codes and convention that the magazine is going to follow is having a well laid out contents page. this will help the person who is looking at the magazine to quickly find articles that they are interested in and articles that they bought the magazine to read about. this is a common convention of the magazine BBC good food as well as other smaller magazines such as Tesco extras cookbook and Waitrose and partners magazine.

On both pages there will also be photos of the some of the other articles that will be inside the magazine. This will let the reader know what type of content is inside of the magazine. The images will be bold and vibrant they will make the page more interesting for the reader.

I will also be creating and then using banners in my page, I will use simple banners like BBC goodfood. to create simple yet effective pages and elements of the page.

The last code and convention that I will be using is the use of different kinds of fonts in the page depending on the importance of the text. For example the heading will be in a sans serif font to pop out on the page. This is then used as a strong contrast compared to the serif font of the body copy text. This is similar to the style of BBC goodfood magazine.

The contents page will not have a lot of adverts as I want the magazine to have a simple and stylised look to it. There was still be some other images on the contents page but these will be relating to the articles that are contained in the rest of the magazine.

The magazine will be following several codes and conventions from the BBC goodfood magazine.

One of these is that I will be using a strong contrasting house style throughout the whole of the magazine. This will not only help with the navigation and the reading of the page but it will create a recognisable brand for the magazine. The colours that I have chosen are black boxes containing white text. In my opinion this is one of the starkest colour contrast making it easy to see the text on the page.

Another code and convention that I will be using is the use of a large image on one of the pages. This image can not only be used as diller but it can also be used to show off what is on the page for example in my magazine it will be a photo of what the recipe will create if followed correctly this adds a helpful clue to what the food should look like as well as adding more interest and colour.

I have used the code and convention of using coloured boxes with low opacity to make the text on the page stand out from the rest of the elements. This has allowed me to clearly display the important body copy even though the text itself is small. It can still be read on the page.

LO3 Contact Sheet And Evaluation

This is the contact sheet for the all of the photos that I have taken for the project. I have tried to use various different shots and angles for the photos to allow me to find the best way to capture the subject of the image. I have chosen and then edited the photos to create a professional looking set of photos that can be placed throughout the magazine.

I have used these photos because they match the genre of a high end cooking magazine, this is important to make sure that the magazine works together.

The images I will be using are the ones that are highlighted in red. I have chosen to use these images because they have good composition as well as lighting and are in focus on the subject of the image. This is key for the magazine because I needed to have image that fit all of these criteria.

LO2 Legal and Ethical Considerations

Legal:

Obscene Publications Act - Inappropriate content in the magazine.

Illegal to publish content that may negatively influence readers. My audience are adults from 30 to 70 mostly female ABC1. E.g. safety, representation about the cultures that the food comes from.

I will have to be careful not to glamorize places where the food may have come from e.g. Mexican gangs. If alcohol is used in a recipe be careful to only use in in context.

Examples of this include:

Do not include any sharp objects or knifes in the image e.g. knife in background or wearing oven gloves when holding tray from the oven. As well as the stereotype of women being in kitchen.

My magazine will need to be very careful with how it represents several different images in the magazine. For example the food that I will be including in the magazine. I will need to be careful to not promote the negative aspects of where the food comes from, for example gangs around the area where the food originally came from e.g. Mexico and the Cartels. I will also need to be careful to not reinforce stereotypes such as women are usually portrayed as in the kitchen. To address this issue I will be using no models throughout the magazine.

Copyright:

Below are some examples of image that I will be using in the magazine. The photos fit the genre of the magazine because they are of the pages and the food that is going to be in the magazine. They are key photos such as the main cover photos on each page.

Libel Law - Illegal to post defamatory harmful content about a person or publish untrue information.

I will need to make sure not to say that people are who we say they are. I will need to check facts on the cultures about the food making sure that the information is correct that is put in the magazine. Libel law aims to stop the spread of misinformation and allows companies and individuals to be protected for other individuals.

Copyright - Allows producers of content to protect their intellectual property.

All of the assets are all produced by me banners and ads and design for each page the body copy I will write. All my own work (Laws Of Contempt) it is a criminal offence to publish anything biased about an ongoing legal court case suing a restaurant in the magazine. Only be able to tell facts in the magazine find a news article that went to court cooking.

Court Case Example - Nigella Lawson.

An example of a court case is nigella lawson and her court case involving illegal drugs that were found at her house. Nigella lawson had been making several different TV programs and cooking books. The lawsuit changed the publics opinion of her and as a result she lost sales in books and popualrity. This is just one example of a court case that I could not report on in my magazine becuase I would not be able to put my own opinion in the magazine in case I get the magazine sued for slander. I would only bve able to state the facts of the case in the magazine.

Analysis Of Existing front Cover

LO2 Mast Head Examples

I like the idea of using bold fonts and simple colors for the mastheads although I think the

fonts used could be better as some of the fonts are not what I would expect to find on a

cooking Magazine. The fonts vary slightly depending on the type of cooking that is in the

magazine, for example the finer cooking magazines have finer and more delicate and

eccentric fonts used in the mastheads, while the basic more simple magazines stick to

plainer fonts that stand out to the eye of the target audience.

All of the mastheads are simple to read and understand this makes them effective to the

target audience and allows them to effectively target their audience. I walk take this into

account and use this to create my own masthead depending on what style what kind of

audience my magazine is for.

Proposal LO1

Form:

The Name of the magazine is Cooking Weekly

The product that I am intending to make is a modern stylized cooking magazine. The magazine will have an international mixture of articles and recipes. The magazine will have international recipes as well as some articles on food on the closer to UK.

Genre:

The genre of the magazine is a cooking magazine and will have recipes for all different types of food from across the world. The magazine will have a simple layout and aesthetic so that it will look stylish, therefore appealing to the target audience. Creating a successful magazine.

Purpose:

The purpose of the magazine is to make a magazine that allows people from all different types of backgrounds to make international dishes easily and quickly. This magazine is going to use a variety of simple recipes to create a magazine that people can follow along with and essentially use as a recipe book to create more interesting dishes and widen their horizons.

The magazine will have several recipes inside of it ranging from savoury main courses to sweet puddings. The magazine will also have interviews from made up people who will be being chefs and their food shall be shown on the magazine. This mix of the 2 recipes and interviews means that my target audience also has something to read like a traditional magazine while also having a much mor interactive and useful magazine than traditional magazines. This will set my magazine apart from others and make it a better choice for the target audience than other magazines.

The magazine will have adverts for other items. This is because the magazine requires funding itself because the sell price is not enough to be able to fund itself without advertisements. The magazine has many different sizes of adverts so that the advertisers have many different sizes and prices to choose.

Content:

The magazine will include a front cover as well as a contents page and 2 double page spreads. I have chosen to add another double page spread to accommodate more content in the magazine. The magazine will use a choice of 3 or 4 different house colours to create synergy throughout the magazine, this will help me to create a recognisable brand for the magazine and help to set the magazine apart from the other competition.

Front Page:

The front page of the magazine is going to be a simple stylized design with minimum banners and different fonts. The main front cover of the magazine will be mostly taken up by an image of a cake, this will create comfortable reassurance in the audience because it is a piece of food which they will recognise this will create reassurance in the target audience and be able to recognise and this will create a common reorganisation within the audience of the magazine. The picture being a cake will reassure them because it will remind them of home and good times making them more likely to want to buy the magazine of the magazine the magazine to sell better by using this technique which will have the recipe inside one of the double page spreads. The Masthead will overlay the main image so will all the other text except from the barcode and issue number. This is to keep the simple design and style of the magazine throughout. The fonts that I have chosen for the main mast head are Cream Cake. This is a fancy flowing font that fits in nicely with the theme of the magazine and is a contrast to the much simpler Roboto font that I will be using for the rest of the smaller print throughout the magazine. This provides a simple text that is easy for the reader to read and understand. This font will be used for the coverline's on the front cover and any other small print on the front cover. I will experiment with the different shot types for the image such as high angle and low angle shots to make sure that I use the best possible image for the main cover image of the magazine. I will want to take a photo of the top of the cake because it presents the cake in the best possible way and provides a cleaner image. The image will be taken this way because it connotes luxury and neatness making the page feel more professional.

The main front cover image itself will be a Victoria sponge cake and will have been decorated with icing sugar. The cake will be in the sunlight so that the top of cake has a shine to it. Using a Victoria sponge cake is not only an iconic recipe, but it also connotes happiness and togetherness as traditionally the cake would have been shared amongst friends and family. This promotes the theme that the magazine is a family magazine and people of all ages can cook what's inside the magazine.

The cover lines for the magazine will be on the left of the front cover, this is to give an edge to the magazine and links to the theme of simplicity that the magazine will have throughout.

For the masthead, the colour I have chosen to go with are a bright yellow and black for the font. This stands out to the reader so that they at once know the name of the magazine. Although it is bright and bold it does not diminish the main image as the masthead is small enough not to be the main centre of attention for the reader. This is a style that is commonly found in cooking magazines as the magazine's editor wants the target audience to see the amazing food rather than a big bold headline. Because of this it is key that the text that I use is correct for the page, this is why I have chosen to use a sans serif font because I want to be able to capture the attention of the reader but I will also need to be careful because I do not want to detract from the main image on the page that is meant to be the main eyecatcher for the page. Sans Serif fonts will allow me to be able to connote the importantness of the text and allow the reader to easily see what the magazine is about.

For the banners that I will have they will just be a simple outline of a rounded rectangle. This keeps the simplistic style of the magazine and creates areas where different bits of text are. By doing this the reader can easily see where the breaks are in the text, and this creates an easy-to-read front cover. The banners will only be an outline, this is a different convention to regular magazines. This is to fit with the simplistic style of the magazine and creates a unique product. It also lets the reader see the whole of the front cover image.

The main coverline will be placed to the lower right of the masthead this means that the coverline will be bigger than the mast head and this will quickly and easily tell the reader the title of the magazine and let the reader know what the main image is and create. flow from the image to the main coverline so that they can more easily understand what the magazine is about. The main coverline will say “Top 10 easy meals”. This will be in a large font called Ace Sans. This font is simplistic yet stands out to the reader and draws their attention to the Coverline while keeping the simplistic style throughout.

Using a Coverline that has the implied meaning that there is more than one main article means that the target audience are more likely to pick up the magazine as they are getting a preview of what is contained inside the magazine. This makes the magazine more appealing without having to use up a lot of space on the front cover fitting into the style of magazine.

The bottom of the front cover will have a small box which will contain the barcode and the edition number this is required on the magazine and my choice of location is at the bottom so that I can still be clearly seen but it does not diminish the main focal points of the magazine.

The front cover is the most important page of the magazine as it is the first thing that the reader will see when they look at the magazine. Therefore, the main image is the most important element on the front cover. I have made the decision not to use a person model in the front cover image. This is because I want the reader's attention to be focused on the food on the front cover not a human hand or body.

Contents Page:

The contents page of the magazine is going to have a similar design in terms of images and styles, fonts and colours to the front page of the magazine. This keeps the simple theme that I am going for, creating an easy to navigate contents page making the magazine more appealing to the reader. Because I will be using the same colours throughout the magazine it will allow me to create synergy for the magazine making the magazine a better product.

The fonts for the contents page are the same with the main heading being in Ace Sans and the smaller text in Roboto. The masthead of the magazine will not be included on the contents page, this is because I do not want to have the name of the magazine repeated at the top of each page as it takes away the simplistic look that I am going for.

The contents page will have a list of different pages and a rough summary of what is on each page. The page numbers will be larger and to the left of the actual text. This allows the reader to easily see the page numbers and go to the page that they are interested in creating a better product.

There will be box outlines that contain the text. This will be in one large column and on the other side of the column there will be images of different food. Carrying the original style of large images from the front cover. Creating a style for the magazine. Using the same style connotes professional looking pages and a well-rounded magazine. The images on the page will be taken using low angle and close shots this is because I need to make sure that the viewer can see the specific alignment of the biscuits because of the way that they fit onto half of the page and not the other. I will take the images in these ways because it will be able to connote a professional as well as luxury looking image.

The text on the pages will be both serif fonts for the pages info but I will be using sans serif fonts to make sure that the page can be easily navigated and the eye is drawn to the title of the pages rather than the sub text on the rest of the page, because I am using Sans Serif font it will connote the importunes of reading that bit of the text before reading the rest of the page.

The main image on the contents page will have a small tag attached to it so that the reader knows where the reference if the magazine is. This links the image to the magazine and can stop any confusion because there is a link to the image later in the magazine, creating a better-connected magazine. The image

On the contents page there will only be one image and this image will cover the entire page, all the text on the page will be overlayed on top of the image. Creating a unique style for the magazine. The colours will stay the same throughout the magazine and therefore create a sense of style throughout the magazine. The colours staying the same will also help with the readership of the magazine, making the magazine simple to read and therefore a better contents page that is easy to understand. As well as helping with the effect of synergy throughout the magazine.

Mums With kids at home ABC1. This means that they will be able to spend more money on
hobbies like food and be able to buy more exotic ingredients so that they will be able to
make the recipes in the magazine. Therefore, the magazine is aimed and this target
audience. The Target audience wants to be able o cook more exciting meals and dishes but
may not have the best ability to do so either because of skill or the ingredients needed. The
magazine is indented to ouch the target audience out of their comfort zone and help them
to explore a wider range of cooking and baking
Resources And personnel:

DPS:

The first double contents page spread is going to be the recipe for the piece of food on the front cover of the magazine. I have chosen this to be the first recipe in the magazine. This is because the piece on the front cover will need to capture the readers' attention. The recipe will be in the Roboto font, this is because the font is small enough to not take away the reader attention from the main image of the text, but the text is also clear and see and easy to read making it an excellent choice of font for most of the text on the DPS. The main image will take up half on the DPS while the text and the recipe will take up the other half of the DPS. This clearly shows the reader where the recipe and what the finished product should look like so that they have visual references to check if they have followed the recipe correctly.

The headline title is one of the most important pieces of text on the whole page because it will be what the reader sees first on the page. This means that it must clearly say what the page is about and capture the reader's attention. On my DPS the title of the page will be “Cheaters Peilla” this is because of the body copy being the recipe for the paella. The body copy is going to be a recipe because of the genre of the magazine the idea of the magazine is that the magazine will be full of tips and recipes this is one of the main selling points of the magazine, this is one of the main reasons that the magazine will appeal to the target audience.

The DPS will have a large image on the right-hand page and on the left hand there will be the text and the recipe for the food that is on the right. The text will be in Roboto font to keep the simplistic design and reinforcing the style throughout the magazine. This makes the magazine easier to read and gives the magazine a more professional look.

There are both Serif and Sans Serif fonts used on the page this will be because of the need to be able to make sure that the viewer knows how to use the page, this is very important because the page will have a website that the reader is meant to be able to follow. The Sans Serif fonts are going to be used as titles and other key steps in the recipe that will guide the reader across the page. The Serif fonts are going to be used for all the other text on the page and this will allow the page to be read more easily because of the contrast in the text looks and styles. The uses of different fonts will connote the importantess and the order that the page should be read in making the magazine function better together.

The images and the text will need to look like they fit into the rest of the magazine. It's important that all the images on the page are taken using a high angle shot type to make sure that the entire image can be seen, and I can make sure that the image attracts the eye of the viewer (eye-catching). I want the images to connote luxury and high-end food.

There will be no banner on the page because I want the magazine to be stylized and therefore, I do not want it to conform to typical tabloid magazines which have a very boxy layout and lots of different adverts. I do not want to follow this convention of typical magazines this will make my magazine stand out from the rest of the magazines that cover food and cooking.

Audience:

Resources And Personnel:

For the magazines creation I will be acting as the photographer, editor and graphic designer as well as the editor for the text columns. I will be using the adobe creative cloud suite to create the pages and allowing me to be able to edit the page from anywhere because they will stored in the creative cloud.

I will not be using any models because of the magazine not needing to have an interview within. I will however use part of my hand in some of the photos to add more to the image. I will be taking the photos in my own house so i will be turning part of my kitchen in to a studio. I will need to get large sheets of white paper to make sure that the background fits the rest of the image.

I will be using lightroom to enhance the colour in the images because it will make the photos look more professional.

Other equipment needed:
Camera.
Tripod.
Cake.
Biscuits.
Plate.
White Paper.

Distribution And Marketing Methods:

I plan to use the local cafes and shops around Sheffield as a way of creating interest in my magazine. I plan to make the magazine available at all cafes as a way of people being able to get exposure to the magazine. I have chosen to put the magazine here since people will already be in the café to eat so putting the magazine here is an appropriate place to put the magazine. Using the fact that the cafes are going to usually have people in them this gives the magazine a reasonable chance that it will be seen by people who are interested in the magazine.

Some of the names of these places are:

  • Copa Café
  • Coffika
  • Lounge 418
  • Eve Kitchen
  • Pom Kitchen

All these places are close and local cafes will fit in perfectly with what I want my target audience to be as they appreciate food and most of these places sell artisan foods which are not commonly found in other places except from there. This shows an element of exclusivity for the places and the magazine. These cafes are also well known and respected in the local community. I plan for people to be able to read the magazine as they are waiting for their food to increase the likelihood of them reading the magazine.

I will be making and using both a website to promote the magazine as well as a social media marketing campaign. The campaign will be mostly on istagram and i will create a cooking weekly Instagram account that has parts of the pages and all of the speacil features of the different magazine issues. This will allow me to be able to reach more of my primary target audience.

Specification:

The specification has the details for the advertising rates for different sizes of adverts. This allows advertisers to easily see the price for adverts throughout the magazine. this makes the advertisers want to advertise more within the magazine this in turn makes the magazine more money and allows the magazine to keep being produced and making money. This is staple of a good magazine to have specifications telling the advertisers the sizes of the ads and what price each ad costs.

The specification also has the Sizes of each page so that the printing company know how big to make each page in the magazine otherwise they would not be able to create a professional looking magazine because some of the pages would be different sizes and therefore not be able to fit together properly to make the magazine.
